On New Year's Eve 2023, John Linscomb hosted a party for friends and family at a building he had put up on wooded land off Hob Warren Road. Mike Zito played that night. Afterward Zito suggested they start selling tickets and book more shows. They took the advice.
The building is The Revenant, at 5510 Hob Warren Rd. Since that first night its poster wall has added Los Lonely Boys, Micky and the Motorcars, Albert Castiglia, and a regular comedy series. Sour Lake's own planning documents say the town is short on places to gather. That makes it worth knowing how a stage this busy ended up down a drive in the pines, and why it runs the way it does.
A Room Built for Birthdays First
The Revenant's own history says it did not start as a business. The owners wanted a space big enough for "holiday celebrations, birthday parties, and even weddings if the occasion called for it," and they write that they "weren't trying to build a business at first." The logo reads "Est. 2022." The first poster on the wall is Zito's New Year's Eve 2023 show.
The venue's account describes the property in some detail. The building sits back off Hob Warren Road with a pond out front and a small dock. Inside you'll find warm wood and an open room. The venue calls itself a listening room, a format where the crowd comes for the music rather than for conversation over it. Its tagline is "The best room is the one that listens." John Linscomb is the owner and also emcees the shows.
That origin explains a lot about how the place works today. A room designed for friends and family puts the crowd close to the stage, and in the venue's words, "the line between stage and crowd disappears."
The Bluesman Who Pushed It Open Lives Down the Road, in Music Terms
The musician who encouraged the first ticketed shows is a regional figure. Zito and Guy Hale founded Gulf Coast Records, and the label's artist page says it is based in Nederland. The Blues Foundation's 2025 Blues Music Awards winners list names Zito's "Life is Hard" as Blues Rock Album of the year.
The Nederland connection helps explain the bookings. A blues artist with a label in Nederland vouched for a small room in Hardin County. The poster wall shows what followed. Zito returned for shows on March 21 and December 30, and Albert Castiglia, another blues guitarist, played twice. Zito also has the next big date on the calendar.
What the Poster Wall Records
The venue keeps a running wall of every show poster, introduced with the line "Every show since the doors opened. Every poster, a night that happened here." Grouped by type, the names look like this:
- Blues: Mike Zito, Albert Castiglia, Rick Lee and the Night Owls
- Texas country and Americana: Micky and the Motorcars, Tyler Halverson, Collin Nash, Jack Barksdale, Jack Barksdale & Guthrie Kennard, George Dearborne & Branded, Ellis Bullard, Jake Andrews
- Bigger-name rock and Tejano: Los Lonely Boys, plus a New Year's Eve 2025 bill with Los Lonely Familia, Texican Legacy, and Cristeros
- Singer-songwriters: Jon Muq, who played twice
- Comedy: Recurring comedy nights, including an "After Tax Bash" and a September 26, 2026 show by The Outlaw Comics
Several posters mark private occasions that became public shows, like George Dearborne & Branded playing a 40th birthday on August 12 and a 50th on August 24. The wall keeps hosting the birthday parties the room was built for.
Most of the photography on the site comes from two local photographers, Brandie Reeves and Cajun Reeves, and the posters are designed by Jon Paul Creative.
Built to Break Even
The most unusual line on the venue's website is about money:
"Our goal has never been to maximize profit. Instead, we aim to pay artists fairly, bring exceptional talent to Sour Lake, and simply break even at the end of the year."
The owners say many of their friends work in the music business and that they understand what artists face, so their aim is a venue where musicians "be treated well, and earn a little more than they might elsewhere."
That model fills a gap the city has put in writing. In February 2026, Leavins Engineering & Design prepared a strengths-and-weaknesses analysis for Sour Lake's 2026 Comprehensive Plan. It lists "Insufficient parks, recreational areas, and community gathering spaces" as a weakness, along with "A narrow selection of restaurants, retail, and services." Among its opportunities, the same document suggests a food truck court as a possible small-business idea.
On show nights, The Revenant already works a little like that idea. The site points concertgoers to rotating food trucks and notes that "availability varies by event":
- Country Boy's Smoking, out of Woodville, serving smoked meats and Texas barbecue
- BiteCraft TX, serving specialty tacos, chopped cheese, smashburgers, and loaded fries
- Taco Mex Fire, a family-owned Beaumont operation serving tacos and birria
A privately owned room that aims only to break even, with trucks from Woodville and Beaumont parked out front, gives Sour Lake a regular night out that the planning study says the town lacks.
What's Booked Through December
Two ticketed shows remain on the 2026 calendar as of October 10.
| Date | Act | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Friday, Oct. 23, 2026 | The Reeves Brothers, with Jakob Brackin opening | Doors at 7 p.m. Matt and Cole Reeves are brothers from Pahrump, Nevada, playing traditional country and honky-tonk. They won Ameripolitan's Honky-Tonk Group of the Year in 2018. |
| Thursday, Dec. 17, 2026 | A Mike Zito Christmas, with Silas Feemster opening | Doors at 7 p.m. TicketSpice lists tickets at $38, and the link on the venue's site shows $40.35. |
Tickets for both shows are sold through The Revenant's TicketSpice page. The public event pages don't list seating, age policy, alcohol rules, or parking. Check with the venue directly before you go. The Reeves Brothers show is also on the City of Sour Lake's October calendar.
The December date brings the story full circle. Zito, the musician who suggested selling tickets after a family New Year's party, closes out the venue's 2026 calendar.
The Rest of the Season Runs Through Lions Club Park
On nights without a show at The Revenant, most of Sour Lake's public fall and holiday calendar happens at Lions Club Park, 485 S. Ann St. The park's pavilion sits across from the Sour Lake Community Center and Library. The Sour Lake Lions Club, which says it was established in 1929, is behind several of these events.
- Trunk or Treat: The city lists it for Saturday, October 17, from 6 to 9 p.m. at Lions Club Park, organized by the Sour Lake Chamber of Commerce. The Chamber's own page gives different times and also mentions October 18, so confirm with the Chamber before heading out.
- Lions Club Plant Swap: Saturday, October 24, from 8 to 10 a.m. at Lions Club Park. Bring plants to trade.
- Christmas in the Park: Saturday, December 12, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Lions Club Park, with the Christmas parade starting at 6 p.m., plus local vendors, food trucks, and family activities, according to the Sour Lake Chamber.
That puts Christmas in the Park five days before A Mike Zito Christmas on Hob Warren Road, so December has two holiday nights out within a week of each other.
